After some research and reading reviews, my husband and I joined a small group 10-day tour that included the city of Prague, small town visits to Český Krumlov and Telč, as well as 3 nights in South Moravia, with its scenic vineyards and “waving” fields of grains.
With only three guests on our tour, it was like traveling with best friends. Jan planned every detail perfectly. The accommodations in the city and the rural areas were unique and charming. The restaurants he chose were great for tasting authentic Czech foods that we probably would not have tried on our own—goulash and dumplings, fried cheese, cabbage soup, garlic soup, and honey cake.
Jan, a Prague native, knew exactly where we needed to be at the best time to get amazing photographs. Some days started at 4:30 am, but the results were so worth the early rise. The sunrise photos of the Charles Bridge without tourists in the shots were some of our favorites of the trip. Some evenings we wanted those lovely blue hour photos such as our shoot from a hilltop in Letna Park of the iconic Prague bridges.
Jan had made reservations a year in advance so we could have private tours of the glass factory, Strahov Library, and the Municipal House. We didn’t just visit the library, we strolled through the halls which is no longer an option for most tourists! We didn’t just snap pictures of the concert hall in the Municipal House, we stood on the stage! Our favorite evening was spent in a candle-lit wine cellar tasting delicious wines with the owner/sommelier. Truly magical!
Jan was always there to help with composition, camera settings, and critiques. He expanded our photography skills and encouraged our creativity. We are glad to have a new photo friend in another country. Thanks, Jan.
First tour with Jan Miracky, seeing the Czech Republic for the first time. Highest recommendation.
Accommodations, food, itinerary (adjusted to fit the weather) and leadership all top notch.
For a photo tour, I feel the most important thing is photo guidance and I was especially pleased with Jan's proactive helpfulness while in the field -- arguably the best among a dozen photo tours I've been on.
My husband and I recently joined Jan Miracky on his Shuttermoon tour of Cinque Terre, Italy. This was our second tour with Jan, and like the first tour, we thoroughly enjoyed our time.
Jan has excellent communication and follow-up skills – any pre trip questions were answered in a very timely manner.
The trip was well organized and kept a good pace. For those looking for a lot of downtime and relaxation, this was not the trip for you. Although we did a lot of moving, we enjoyed nice leisurely lunches/dinners and benefitted greatly from the expertise of our local Italian guide, Leo, in picking restaurants to give us a great non-tourist experience. The lodging and transfers were very comfortable.
We unfortunately didn’t have nice sunny weather for our time in Cinque Terre, but that enabled us to learn how to overcome less than perfect weather and still come out with good photos. Both Leo and Jan were readily available to advise on settings and composition to make sure we got the most out of the photo sessions.
The group dynamics were great and we all encouraged each other to try different compositions, long exposures, etc.
We relied heavily on shooting at blue hour (and the weather cooperated) which are my favorite photos of the trip. Seeing the villages light up in the evening was a highlight for me.
Although the focus of the tour was certainly photography, my husband is a non-photographer and still found the trip to be very enjoyable. Obviously, as photographers we search out the best views, and he had the benefit of both seeing the best views and then having time to explore a bit on his own while we spent time photographing.
I’m looking forward to taking another Shuttermoon tour with Jan and would not hesitate to recommend his tours.
I’d also like to add that a real bonus is his after-tour critique/feedback of your photos. Jan provides a very thorough review of each photo you submit to him so that you benefit from the expertise of a successful professional photographer to help you improve your own photos.
I just returned from an Iceland photo tour with Jan Miracky. This was a trip a girlfriend and I started planning a year ago.
Jan did an amazing job of providing an itinerary prior to our tour as well as providing gear lists etc well in advance of our trip.
The accommodations were very nice and our photography stops were beautiful. Jan's style of teaching and enthusiasm made our trip fun! I would highly recommend a tour with him.
Wow! What a trip!
I have recently returned from a photography tour with Jan in Iceland. It was amazing! He was so well organized. We just had to show up with our gear and follow along on his exiting itinerary. Jan is so fun to travel with. He communicates well and his passion for photography is contagious. He has patience in his teaching. I liked how he would show us infield composition to help us get great shots. Yet, he would encourage us to explore and experiment on our own.
It truly was an adventure with lots of laughter. I learned so much and it was wonderful to capture images of so many breathtaking landscapes!
Thank you Jan, for supporting me in my photographic learning journey. I hope to join you again on a tour somewhere in this big beautiful world we live in!
"Jan is an outstanding photographer and tour organizer. I had the privilege of taking his 10-day photography tour of the Czech Republic in May 2024.
A skilled and passionate photographer, Jan went above and beyond to ensure that the group members had opportunities to improve their photography skills through an enjoyable tour.
Jan has the ability to explain photography concepts and adapt his instruction to group members with various levels of photography knowledge. He also provided excellent guidance on composition and post-processing of images. I especially appreciated Jan’s friendliness, patience, good humour, and interesting conversations on a broad range of topics.
The itinerary was well-balanced, with a mix of cityscapes and rural landscapes, as well as some down time to do post-processing of images or just to relax. It was particularly helpful that Jan took us to photo shoot vantage points that would have been hard to find on our own. While every day provided incredible new sights, the highlight for me was photographing landscapes in south Moravia and learning about the local culture.
My photography skills have improved dramatically as a result of this tour and I highly recommend Jan to anyone looking to improve their photography skills through Shuttermoon’s travel photography tours.
I am grateful for Jan’s dedication to photography, his support of my learning journey, and am hopeful to continue to explore travel photography with him again in the future."
"Just returned from a tour of the Czech Republic with Shuttermoon. Jan did a fabulous job with this trip. His attention to detail and pre departure communication made sure that all my questions were answered. The itinerary was packed and a bit of a whirlwind but so enjoyable. Having been to Prague previously, I was excited to see other parts of the country and the tour did not disappoint. The itinerary was varied and each day presented something different to experience – both from a photography and cultural experience standpoint.
From a photography perspective I appreciated Jan helping me move out of my comfort zone and photograph subjects that I do not usually photograph. Needless to say, I learned a lot along the way that will help me become a better photographer – both in the field and post production. With his help I have a lot of “keeper” photos from the trip and increased confidence in my skills.
I would have no reservations recommending Jan and Shuttermoon tours and look forward to joining another tour in the near future."
"Even for a non-photographer this was a great trip. I got to see parts of the Czech Republic that the average traveler would not get to get. In addition the restaurants chosen for meals very good. I also learned some photography techniques to use with a cell phone. Highly recommended trip."
"I recently took a photographic trip to Capadoccia with Jan Miřacký with whom had the pleasure of doing a photo tour of Prague recently.
We focused mainly in Capadoccia, and secondarily in Istanbul via an extension. The experiences I had were phenomenal. I was a little concerned about the balloon ride, as I had never done one, but I flew many times in small four seater planes. The ride was so smooth and the operators so skilled that it was a total pleasure, including the flawless landing. Of course the pictures of the balloon ride were incredible, from the preparation of the balloons and the view itself from aloft.
Another unforgettable experience was the Salt Lake. I got incredible pics of the mirror-like lake, the horses and the model. The reflections are such that the horizon becomes blurred so it seems like a continuous background with the reddish hue of the sunset.
There were many more such experiences including the pottery demonstration with the smoke machine. We were dead tired towards the end, because we crammed so many things in just a few days, but the experience was incredible. I have also to mention the people that were incredible helpful at all times, from the hotel personnel to the tour guides.
Highly recommended."
"Jan is a very talented photographer who generously shares his expertise with amateurs like me. He is a wonderful, caring leader who provides world-class photography tours."
"Jan provided a perfect balance of photography opportunities, cultural experiences, and unstructured downtime during our tour in Myanmar. He is kind, personable, and a genuinely fun person to spend time with. I would 10 out of 10 recommend him to anyone looking for an amazing photography experience!"
"Jan's contribution to the success of the Iceland photography tour cannot be overstated. He is a skilled photographer and motivator who went above and beyond in helping us learn and improve our photography skills, while fostering an incredible sense of camaraderie among the participants."
